The picturesque town of Gurye, Jeollanam-do will host IRONMAN Gurye Korea, scheduled to take place on September 10, 2017.

Gurye, located in the Southwest portion of Korea, has remained one of the best kept secrets in Korea until recently. Known only to the handful of hiking enthusiasts in the past, it has grown in popularity becoming more accessible than ever thanks to the introduction of high-speed rail. Gurye will provide the perfect setting for this beautiful new IRONMAN event in Korea.

Athletes will begin with a 3.8 km swim in the pristine fresh water of the Jirisan Lake, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Jirisan National Park. They will then set out on a mostly flat and fast 180 km bike leg through the scenic Gurye region, passing picturesque mountains, swaying rice fields, and the winding Seomjingang River. The 42.195 km run leg takes athletes onto trails around the lake and to the wide open country road flanked by cheering local villagers before heading into Natural Dream Park for the finish.

IRONMAN Gurye, Korea will offer 30 qualifying age group slots for the 2018 IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

"In 1978, U.S. Naval Commander John Collins and his wife Judy issued a challenge. They proposed combining Oahu’s 2.4 mile swim race, 112 mile bike race, and 26.2 mile marathon. On February 18, 1978 fifteen competitors, including Collins, traveled to Waikiki to take on the first-ever IRONMAN challenge.
